River blue, the documentary on the denim industry

River blue tells how textile production, including denim production, leaves a trail of destruction that affects rivers and human health. The documentary was presented at the Milan Fashion Film Festival. The clothing industry and especially the denim industry are contributing to environmental degradation due to their polluting production processes, which are responsible for the loss of biodiversity in several rivers.

This is the scenario denounced by River blue, the documentary directed by David McIlvride and proposed within the schedule of the Milan Fashion Film Festival taking place from 20 to 25 September. The film is a journey to discover the state of waterways near textile mills in China, Bangladesh and India. It illustrates the consequences of this industry on the environment and on people, while at the same time offering a message of hope for a future in which sustainable fashion will be the norm, identifying innovative companies such as Italdenim and Jeanologia that propose solutions that reduce the use of water and polluting chemicals.

These are stark and sad images shown in River blue by Mark Angelo, the American activist engaged in river conservation who has travelled the world to examine their state in the countries where largest clothing production sites are located, i.e. those that supply all the major western western fashion brands. A global expedition to recount the traditions, customs and landscapes destroyed by the textile and denim industries that operate by virtue of profit, heedless of their responsibilities towards the environment and people.

The future is
sustainable fashion

A more environmentally sensitive fashion is possible, and witness Luigi Caccia, founder of the Italdenim company specialising in more sustainable production, and the Spanish company Jeanologia, which proposes a new laser technology to treat denim by giving it the classic faded effect.

River blue wants to send a clear message to the fashion world and especially to the consumer to make more conscious and responsible purchasing choices. This offers a new point of view focused on the possibility of transforming the textile and clothing industry into a more sustainable reality, thanks to the application of innovative technologies that reduce the use of water and chemicals while preserving the aesthetics and quality of the product.
